- Black Pearl Qualities |
 |
| The surface of a pearl
is another important factor in its
grade. The appraisor examines the
pearl for the continuity of the outer
layer of nacre. A pearl with as many
as two or three pin-prick like markings
or "birthmarks" can still be classified
as an "A" grade pearl, as far as
surface is considered. Absolutely
"clean" or flawless pearls are available,
though highly rare and prized. Blemishes
and rippling in the nacre decrease
the grade of the pearl - B,C,& D.
